Classroom Slang Glossary

Class Slang, Expressions, & Idioms Wiki Glossary:  Throughout the quarter, you will make entries into our Wiki in order to increase your understanding and to help others better understand certain phrases, expressions, and idioms that you hear in your daily on TV, in movies, on the street, in class, and all around you.  There are three parts to this:
A).  You must create 4 separate word entries (the title of the wiki should be the word / phrase, such as “I’m down with that”) that include:
- the word,
- your reaction to it or questions you had when you heard it,
- where you heard or saw it and said by whom in what context,
- what you think it might mean,
a definition you find of it (cite this), as well as
- 2 examples of how it is used (cite this if you copy and paste something).
B).  You must also comment on 3 separate words that your classmates write about throughout the quarter.  This thoughtful response should include:
- a response to your classmate’s reaction,
- an affirmation of how that word is used,
- any synonyms to it, plus
- 2 more examples of how it is used- you should make up one example, and find another
example from the internet (cite this).
- You may include anything else- a video clip in which it is used, etc.
The schedule indicates their due dates with the words “Wiki post due.”  To maintain alphabetical order, please “Edit” wikis rather than creating New wikis by finding the page that contains the first letter of the first word of your entry.  In this way, we will create a glossary that the class may take at the end of the course.
C).  At the end of the quarter, you will compile all of your postings onto a Word document to turn in, as listed on the schedule.  I encourage you to begin this when you create your first posting rather than waiting until the end of the quarter since it can be cumbersome trying to find all of your postings and responses.
Your grade on this will be the percentage completed, and you can have a look at the grade sheet on Blackboard → Assignments → Slang Wiki Glossary.
